Engineer, traveller, note-taker

Hi, I'm Vinay. I build things, see places and write it down.

Software engineer by day. Off the clock I travel, write down thoughts, and build small tools like GetSet for Chrome.

What is Distracting Life

Distracting Life is me distracting myself with good things: amazing places, people and stories, so I am not only absorbed in everyday life.

I pay my bills by building software. The rest of the time goes to travelling, writing down thoughts and making small things, and this site is where they end up.

Places

Countries I have been to. More stamps to come.

Tech

Side projects I build on my own.

Chrome extension

GetSet

Make localhost look exactly like staging.

Copy a site's local storage, session storage and cookies, then set them on another site in one click. Built for reproducing staging and production state on localhost without editing values in DevTools.

  • Get, Set and Clear for local storage, session storage and cookies
  • Asks for cookie access once per site, nothing at install
  • Everything stays in your browser: no servers, no tracking
The GetSet popup on a staging site, with Get, Set and Clear buttons for local storage, session storage and cookies.

Built at work

Something I built for my day job.

AI assistant, built at work

Maya

Reliable where we can be, flexible where we have to be.

Support complaints used to bounce between support and developers: escalate, wait, run queries by hand, reply. Nobody asked me to fix it; I built Maya on weekends and late nights. Now support asks a question and gets a clear, actionable answer in seconds, with no escalation in most cases.

  • Ask "user cannot login" and it flags the inactive default branch and suggests the exact fix
  • 20+ deterministic checks run first, in a fixed order; the model only handles what they cannot explain
  • Read-only access for investigations, with generated SQL validated in several layers before it runs
  • Write actions skip the model entirely and stop for a human confirmation
  • Built for support, now used across the company to get answers out of the data

Work

How I work, day to day.

  1. Understanding the problem

Working with stakeholders to understand what they actually need, asking the right questions early, and turning requirements into clear plans the team can build.

  2. Product and design

Working closely with the design team to improve the product, from early ideas to the small details that make it easy to use, on desktop and mobile.

  3. Building end to end

Owning features from the database to the UI, mostly in TypeScript, React and Node.js, and shipping them in small, reviewable steps.

  4. Quality and reliability

Measuring before shipping, testing what matters, and watching production so problems surface before users notice them.

  5. Better ways of working

Shared components, review standards and AI-assisted workflows that help the team move faster without lowering the bar.
